Why UV Protection is important
Environmental conditions increase exposure because UVR reflects from many surfaces.
Ultra-violet radiation (UVR) is harmful to the eye and may lead to disease such as cataracts, age related macular degeneration, and blindness. While the primary source of UV light is the sun, other sources include welder’s flash, television and computer screens, fluorescent lighting, high-intensity mercury vapor lamps, and xenon arc lamps.
For every 5000 foot altitude, the UVR hazard increases about 10%. Additional dangerous exposure happens when UV rays shine more directly on people. This means increased risk during the summer months, exposure closer to the equator, and between the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM. Hint: it’s high UVR danger time when you are taller than your shadow.
Human eyes have limited natural protection from ultra-violet radiation hazards. A normal horizontal gaze decreases the exposure to UVR entering from the atmosphere above. The brow, nose and cheeks also act as a natural barrier to UVR. Additionally, eyelids and eye lashes protect the eye when one squints against bright sunlight. Light or incomplete cloud cover provide little protection as most UVR is scattered and reflected in the atmosphere and still reaches earth’s surface.
When outdoors personal eye protection is best achieved by always wearing glasses that filter UVR and by wearing a hat with a 3” minimum brim. Wrap around or wide side brow style glasses increase protection by about another 5%.
